a day is long.

when i am sleeping christian is awake.
our trips overlapped-
he has been in shanghai since sunday,
i returned from utah tuesday.

we’ve been apart before.

i used to call him in the morning while i was in virginia,
getting ready to sleep after a night shift.
he’d be on his way to class in seattle.

but this distance,
seems  feels  is  harder.

things left unsaid when i left –
decisions put on hold,
conversations limited.

each day i watch the clock,
anxious,
for him to wake up on the other side of the world
tomorrow.

don’t go far off, not even for a day, because —
because — I don’t know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.

{i included this verse of neruda’s don’t go far off on our wedding announcements}

  1. i was thinking how cultured i must be to recognize that neruda quote–but duh, it’s from your wedding announcement. again, eat more cadbury minis–it will make the time go faster. 🙂

  2. sigh. totally understand. jeremy was in china for almost 2 weeks and it does make it incredibly challenging. keep your head up. and agreed, eat more treats and watch cheesy girly movies 🙂
